First Friday Artwalks

If you’re visiting any of our beautiful beach communities along the Northwest Florida coastline, especially in early fall, be on the lookout for community events on the first Friday of each month. Artwalks specifically are a top event on this day, especially in downtown Fort Walton Beach and the Shops at Ruskin in Seaside of the beaches of South Walton.

The events in Fort Walton Beach take place just on the other side of the bridge along Highway 98. Enjoy walking amongst the antique buildings, sipping on wine as you wander among the vendors. Grab a treat for the kids at the cupcake shop and even a souvenior for your four-legged family member at the dog bakery. The Shops at Ruskin are tucked behind the amphitheater of Seaside. Even if you don’t stop into the art and jewelry shops, each of which provide snacks and beverages, walking amongst the old trees listening to the quiet live music in this quaint community is a memorable way to pass an evening before a delicious dinner. These walks take place each Friday evening beginning at 5PM and the next scheduled events take place Labor Day weekend and are a great way to kick-off your beach vacation!

South Walton Turtle Watch 2011

While the entirety of the Gulf Coast is a popular nesting spot for many sea turtles, the beaches of South Walton seem to be especially popular. As of July 19, the area has already reported 31 nests along their shores!

Sea Turtles are protected by the Endangered Species Act and all measures are taken to ensure that these cute babies are able to hatch and make their way into the Gulf of Mexico as nature intended. South Walton is especially dedicated and have formed the South Walton Turtle Watch organization. These volunteers go through many hours of training to ensure they properly help these little guys along. Each morning volunteers patrol the beaches looking for and clearly marking new nests to prevent beachgoers from accidentally walking across one and potentially disturbing it.

Hatchings are expected to begin any day now! If you’re out on the beaches, keep an eye out for the baby turtles making their way up from the sand and out to the Gulf. While it is fine to watch them and enjoy the experience, please do not disturb them, shine lights or take flash photography as this could interfere with them making it safely into the Gulf. Happy Turtle Watching!
